Different slip rings exist in different scenes to meet special needs. Large-sized cable reels are installed on offshore construction vessels. Electrical cable reels are installed to hold and control cranes. As for small size cable reels, they are installed in high-end applications. An electrical slip ring is required to allow the joint to rotate and transmit signals.
Based on the design, slip rings are expected to transmit high power electricity, so slip rings are usually of carbon brush design. The most representative slip ring model is the LPA 350/340 series. These series are specially designed for cable reels on ship winches. The most characteristic feature is the extra large through hole design. The diameter of the center hole is 300 mm. And to cope with the extreme conditions in the ocean, these slip rings have a high degree of protection, up to IP56. Their operating voltage is 380 VAC or 440 VAC.
The aforementioned slip ring voltage is quite low compared to the voltage used on a research vessel or ROV. To enable power transmission in the deep ocean, the slip rings have higher operating voltages, mostly above 2500 VAC. In addition, to provide high-performance communication on an umbilical ROV, an optical rotary coupling is often integrated into the slip ring solution. Typical solutions are the LPA000-0250-01PE-FO04 and the LPA000-0630-01PE-0620-30S. Both of these devices integrate 1 4-channel single-mode optical slip ring.
And there are also very convenient slip ring solutions for high-end commercial electronics. Compared with giant slip rings, mini slip rings have wider application and larger annual production volume. LPT012-0405-06S is a newly published slip ring model for portable cable reels. This electrical slip ring combines 4 channels of 5A power and 6 channels of encoding to support the transmission of various sensor signals.
