Oil and gas exploration equipment is an important component of the high-end equipment manufacturing industry and the culmination of the industrial system. Many equipment components in this field also require slip rings. In the mechanical engineering industry, the equipment installed on the drill pipe usually needs to be submerged thousands of meters deep into the ocean. In order to provide the required power to the drill pipe for long-distance data transmission, it is necessary to use high voltage of at least 2500 V. Similar to the slip rings used on oil drilling platforms, as well as the slip rings used in the control center of deep-sea exploration robots on oil and gas exploration vessels, in order to provide power to underwater robots that penetrate several kilometers into the seabed, half of them have also increased the power. The rated working voltage of the slip rings is 2500 V.

Whether it is the slip ring of the deep-sea exploration robot or the slip ring on the drill pipe of the oil drilling platform, both belong to high-voltage slip rings and use carbon brushes and copper rings to make contacts; But the required rated current is very small, for example, the slip ring on the drill pipe current of the drilling rig is only 120A; the slip ring current of the underwater exploration robot is about 20A per circuit. The slip ring of the pod-type electric thruster is a relatively high-voltage and large-current slip ring in oil and gas exploration equipment.

Pod type electric thruster, also known as rudder propeller, is widely used on luxury cruise ships, research vessels, oil drilling platforms and other marine platforms. Why is it called pod thruster slip ring? Because this type of propeller directly uses the electric motor to drive the helix forward, the motor and the propeller are suspended and installed at the stern of the ship together; and the reason why it is also called rudder propeller is due to the slip ring’s ability to achieve 360° wireless rotation

The slip ring is installed on top of the pod thruster electric motor. In order to meet the high power requirements of the motor, the rated current of the pod thruster slip ring motor generally reaches several thousand amperes. For example, the slip ring of the 3MW pod electric thruster developed by JINPAT is rated at 4000A.
